What is a Multimedia network? This is a network which enables different types of information to be sent over the same network in a very efficient manner and with appropriate quality of service. It is very well suited to transport any type of information, voice, data or video using high bitrate (25.6 Mbps, 155 Mbps) interconnections, but also has built-in mechanisms to support low bitrate connections. In this way a real multimedia network can be created within a single Local Area System. However, it is very simple to extend the network over multiple Local Area Systems using different communication bearer system including high data rate radio connections or satellite connections.
What is the purpose of a multimedia network? A multimedia network provides the backbone for the different types of communication which exist in a Local Area System. Typically, audio users with headsets or handsets, telephones, radios , PCs, sensors, video displays, workstations, servers, etc. are all connected to the network. The network enables communication between the different users of the network. It deals, among others, with security issues, routing, bandwidth control, crossing of narrow band communication bearers, conversion of different data types and intelligent networking. Most importantly, information available on the network can be sent to virtually any other user connected directly or indirectly to the network. |
