The Active Phased Array Radar (APAR) being developed by Hollandse Signaalapparaten B.V. (Signaal) has reached another milestone. On 20 December 1999 the Engineering Development Model (EDM), consisting of one array, was installed at the Royal Netherlands Navy's Land Based Test Site in Den Helder, the Netherlands.

APAR is the multifunction radar ordered by the German and Netherlands Navies for their F124 and LCF frigates. Its development was started in1995 and testing and series production are now running in parallel. This is a unique development and production concept, which is very cost-effective, resulting in low risk and faster production.

The APAR will undergo operational tests and will subsequently be integrated with the Signaal SMART-L long range volume search radar and Command ¥system in order to undergo Anti Air Warfare System tests. At the end of 2000 when all testing has been completed, the Royal Netherlands Navy will use the APAR EDM as a reference system for training purposes.

This testing phase is significant and demonstrates the confidence of Signaal and the customers in the APAR concept. After a successful and elaborate testing programme at the Signaal site in the ARES (Adaptable Radar Environmental Simulator) and CATR (Compact Antenna Test Range), APAR will now be tested in a real sea environment.

The qualification programme will run till the end of 2000. The Factory Acceptance Test will then take place. In 2000 deliveries to the shipyards for the series programme consisting of seven systems for the German and Royal Netherlands Navies will begin
