The Dutch Ministry of Defence and Thales Nederland B.V. have signed a contract for the delivery of 62 SQUIRE systems, including logistics and training, on 20 June, 2002. The SQUIRE systems will be used by the Royal Netherlands Army as well as by the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps.
The contract is the successful follow-up of the development contract that was signed some 5 years ago.
The first deliveries will start third quarter of 2003.
The contract also includes a maintenance warranty period of 15 years, which is a trend-setting development.
SQUIRE is a man-portable medium range ground surveillance radar that can detect and classify moving targets on, or close to, the ground at ranges up to 24 km. SQUIRE consists of compact units to be carried in two backpacks. Each weighs less than 25 kgs, including batteries, and the system can therefore be easily carried by two persons.
Thales Nederland is renowned for its naval and ground based radar and sensor systems. In the last decade Thales Nederland has developed a family of silent radars. This radar family is based on the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) principle and consequently has very Low Probability of Intercept. The FMCW technology is applied for air surveillance, coastal surveillance, navigation and, in case of the SQUIRE, for ground surveillance. At present more than 200 FMCW systems have been sold to several countries.
Since 2001, SQUIRE is part of the global Thales ground surveillance radar offering, which created, together with the BOR-A-550 and the AMSTAR, a complete portfolio of man-portable or vehicle-mounted infantry radars. |
