Within the framework of the Norwegian Navy contract signed by Armaris (see article here), Thales will provide an MRR-3D-NG* radar surveillance system - coupled with a friend or foe identification system - for each of the six Skjold class patrol boats. The first delivery is scheduled for mid-2006 and the other systems will follow every quarter.

According to Thales Naval France Commercial Director Alain Duhamel, " the MRR-3D NG quickly emerged from Thales rich radar catalogue as the one best-suited to the Norwegian Navy's needs".

Indeed, the MRR-3D NG, nicknamed "the ship's eyes", is renowned for its excellent eyesight! The powerful radar can detect targets 180km away when in 'surveillance' mode, and ensure the ship's defence within a radius of 70km. It can operate efficiently in difficult environments (unfavourable weather conditions, dense electromagnetic fields.) thanks to signal-processing techniques which draw on cutting-edge Group-developed technology.

The naval and terrestrial versions of the MRR have been immensely fruitful: 76 units sold during a 12-year period in Europe, the Middle East and South Africa. After recently being chosen for the French Navy's future projection and command vessels, this latest Norwegian contract means the MRR-3D NG is well-positioned for future success on the international stage.

*MRR: Multi-Role Radar; NG: New Generation
