On 22 December 2003, the Royal Danish Navy and Thales Nederland have signed a contract for the delivery of two SMART-S Mk2 radar systems for the Danish Flexible Support Ship program. The first system is scheduled to be delivered at the end of 2006.
SMART-S Mk2 was selected by the Royal Danish Naval Materiel Command for its littoral performance based on the proven Thales 3D radar portfolio, its solid-state technology, its ease of operation and its graceful degradation characteristics.
SMART-S Mk2 is Thales' new E/F-band 3D medium to long range Volume Search Radar, optimized for operation in littoral conditions and capable of automatically distinguishing between clutter and actual threats, in both sea and land environments.
As SMART-S Mk2 fully matches the engagement envelope of the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile, the system is perfectly suited for modern AAW defence applications. SMART-S Mk2 has a coverage of 250 km in range and up to 70 degrees in elevation. Its capabilities also include surface surveillance, surface gunfire support and helicopter guidance.
