The Korean Ministry of National Defence has appointed Samsung Thales as contractor for the full scale development of a battery Day Forward Observation Sight. The development and production phases of the contract over the next seven years should generate more than 150bn Korean won (¬105m).
The new laser range finder provides new functions such as day or night measurements and observations, regardless of weather conditions. Integrated GPS technology enables user location to be easily tracked and target location to be identified with high precision. Voice and data communications equipment is also incorporated.
From the outset, Samsung Thales has worked in close conjunction with the customer on aspects of development planning and daily progress, with a view to reducing costs. Internal development costs have thus been minimized, bringing estimated manufacturing prices to a reasonable level. Components have been designed as modular or card-types, making it possible to modify functions for future performance improvement or export purposes through straightforward software add-ons, and without the need for any hardware or overall configuration changes.
With this contract, Samsung Thales has successfully secured an unrivalled position in the market for new battery observation sights, as well as gaining a competitive edge for forthcoming bids within this field.
