Prime minister Ys of the Netherlands Antilles, Netherlands Minister of Justice Donner and his Antillean colleague Ribeiro inspected the Thales Squire radar system on Saturday 8 January 2005. Squire, developed as a battlefield surveillance radar, serves as a coastal surveillance radar on the Netherlands Antilles until mid 2006 when the definitive coastal surveillance radar system will be operational. This system is still in the tender phase and Thales has also made an offer. The present arrangement enables the company to demonstrate its excellent naval surveillance capabilities.
The Netherlands Marine Corps and the Royal Netherlands Air Force have 62 Squires in operational service. For this special 'interim' job three systems were modified to be able to monitor ship traffic around the Leeward Islands. The modifications include the addition of a 'Sea Mode'. This includes an automatic clutter filter, providing Squire with sea surveillance capabilities that make detection of small naval targets up to long ranges possible. Another addition is a map system that will be realized in January. This is realized by means of a laptop computer connected to Squire. On this laptop, the TEVADIS tool has been installed. The software, developed by Thales, projects the plots on a digitised map, providing the user with a better image of the environment.
The temporary radar installation was put into operation on 1 January 2005.
