Portsmouth, on the south coast of England, is hosting a week of special events. Thales is among the frontline partners, as one of the sponsors of the Trafalgar 200 events and the International Festival of the Sea (IFoS), the annual celebration of the sea and naval history.
On Tuesday 28th June, Trafalgar 200 events, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, culminated in the impressive spectacle of the International Fleet Review. Invited by the Royal Navy, over 150 vessels from around the world - everything from romantic tall ships of yesteryear to dynamic warships of today such as France's Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier - were reviewed by Her Majesty The Queen in the eastern Solent. This was followed by the illustration of a sea battle from Nelson's time.
Next, spanning a four-day period beginning on June 30th, the International Festival of the Sea is expected to draw over 275,000 visitors in total, marking one of the UK's largest outdoor events.
Thales will be sponsoring 'Youth and Education Day', the first day of the festival on June 30th, which will see thousands of schoolchildren take part in a programme of interactive events and activities examining a range of maritime topics. Topic areas include ecology, culture and the history of the sea, and there will also be events looking at career opportunities.
"Thales is proud to be sponsoring this event," said Alex Dorrian, CEO Thales UK. "The Group's technology has been at the heart of the Royal Navy since 1892 - when a Thales company first supplied the Royal Navy. Thales is a forward looking company and as such has always focused its charitable and community work on our nation's youth, which is why we have chosen to sponsor 'Youth and Education Day'."
