On Sunday 29 May, the annual Thales FBK-Games were held, the largest athletics event in the Netherlands and one of the select few events in the world with a formula one status. This year's edition, the 24 th , marked the opening of the new stadium. The crème de la crème of all athletes was present. Kenenisa Bekele had announced to try to break his world record on the 10.000 meters. Due to the gusty wind he just missed the record but nevertheless ran a third-best time ever. It was an exciting race, even more as fellow Kenyan Abebe Dinkessa managed to stay with him until a few hundred meters before the finish. Marian Jones, Olympic gold medallist in 2004, controversial because of - unproven - accusations of using doping, ran to a second place in the women's 100 meter sprint, but was happy to compete again in an international event. Gert-Jan Liefers finished fourth at the 3000 meters after 7 minutes and 37 seconds, a new Dutch record.
On Thursday 26 May the Thales FBK-Games were unofficially opened by the Double Mile Run of Hengelo. A tradition of 22 years, this is a recreational run to kick off this formula one event. Because of the high involvement of Thales in the FBK Games, as many as 223 Thales employees took part in this race. Most were happy to participate and finish; some aimed at a good result. All in all a very successful event.
