Thales has been working to develop network centric solutions to improve the security of military sites and projected forces. This initiative has already generated several successful programs such as the SPECTRE Assessment study in France or the supply of the MobIDS perimetric detection system to the German Ministry of Defence along with its on-going deployment in Afghanistan. DISCUS, which is a new success in that area, is clearly the result of a close co-operation between the Dutch Ministry of Defence and THALES.
The DISCUS system interconnects in an innovative way radar systems, day-and-night long range observation systems, a communication platform and a central command post. The DISCUS system is based on proven components which are already in operational use by the Dutch Defence Forces. Additionally, THALES will provide the system under a fast track program that will see DISCUS to be operational by the time that the Dutch Forces are deployed in theatre.
The award confirms THALES’ leading position in area protection systems which are viewed as an increasing need in the frame of today’s international peacekeeping and peace-enforcement missions.
