On 13 May Mrs Bianca Hoogendijk, wife of Netherlands' Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, performed the christening of the Royal Netherlands Navy's second Landing Platform Dock the Johan de Witt at the Schelde dockyard in Flushing.

The ship, with a displacement of 16.700 tons, a length of 176 metres and a width of 29 metres, substantially bigger than its sister the HrMs Rotterdam, will be deployed in peace-keeping missions all over the world. However, it is also capable of performing valuable tasks in humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations. In the months to come, the Johan de Witt will be further outfitted. Also the Thales VARIANT multi-purpose surveillance and navigation radar will be installed, as well as the IRSCAN infrared surveillance system. Provisions for the GOALKEEPER close-in weapon system will also be made, enabling the quick installation of this effective last-ditch defence weapon.
Sea trials of the Johan de Witt are scheduled on 21 September and official handover to the Royal Netherlands Navy will take place on 26 October.
